» Examples of Shelf Stable small sized Meat products
Here are some readily available small sized shelf stable meat products:
Starting at the top left, and going clockwise:
- corned beef spread
This is a bit pricier than my target range, however if I see it on sale, I grab some. It's a nice treat, and one can has enough for about two sandwiches.
- can of ham chunks
This is from a dollar store, and good value. I typically enhance 2 to 4 meals from a single can.
- vienna sausages
These typically cost about half a dollar, and are "meh" tastewise. I typically enhance two meals from a can.
- Chicken Salad kit, Ham Salad kit
These typically cost a dollar, though can be pricier at regular grocery stores. I typically get one meal out of a kit. Recently, I've been saving the crackers (they go very well with cheese) and using regular bread with the meat salad, which I prefer taste wise.
- Bacon Bits (two varieties, Aldi's house brand and Walmart's "low sodium")
These are a superb value (about $1.30 for 2.5 ounces), can easily last for a month or more after opening, without refrigeration,
and even a little bit really punches up a meal.
- Hormel Pepperoni (2 pouches per pack, 1.75 ounces for both)
These are a very good value, costing a dollar for two mini pouches.
I can get a satisfying sandwich out of one pouch, or use it as an enhancer among 1 to 2 meals.
(Note: item below the "SPAM Single" is a single pouch)
- SPAM Single (2.5 ounces)
These cost about a dollar in stores, and can be bought in bulk for about $0.70 each.
I can get one to two meals out of each.
- Genoa Salami (3 ounces)
Available at dollar stores for a dollar. I can make 2 to 3 sandwiches, or enhance 2 to 4 meals.
- meat sticks
These are widely available, and the generic brands are good value. 1 or 2 of these really pumps up scrambled eggs.
- "snack bites" (limited regional availability)
I haven't tried these yet. They appear to be a retort pouch version of vienna sausages.
I've bolded the products that I use the most and regularly stock up on.
