Several years ago, Burger King and McDonald's had a summer time special of a soft serve ice cream cone for 50 cents, with the option of getting it in a sundae container without the cone.
I usually carry some cans of root beer, so I tried combining the two to make a Do-It-Yourself root beer float.
It worked perfectly, the very first time. :)

Sadly, both chains no longer have that great summer special, so I rarely do this, except when it's particularly hot and I want a "Morale Boost", particularly after a gruelling town resupply.

Pictures:

one soft serve ice cream "cone" in a sundae dish, and one can of root beer (Dollar General's house brand):

it was so hot that day, that the ice cream was already starting to melt, which, if anything, somewhat enhanced the "float" goodness :)

after very carefully pouring some of the root beer into the sundae dish:

Note:  the seal between the top and base is not liquid proof, so be careful not to add too much soda at any time.
I find it is usually "tight" enough that one can drink/sip directly from it, just be careful... and enjoy! :)

After adding the soda, I either swirl it or mix it just a bit with a spoon, then slowly sip it while streaming video (from the restaurant's free wifi), topping it up as needed. :)
Back when the "cone" cost less than a dollar, I'd typically buy a value entree at the same time.
Now, that pushes me above my $2 luxury meal limit, so have not yet done so this year.

Cost:

The soft serve ice cream "cone" in a sundae dish should cost between about 50 cents to $1.29 (make sure of the price when you order it - I recently was overcharged, but caught it in time).

I usually buy my root beer by the fridge pack (12 cans) at Dollar General during one of their Saturday $25 for $20 sales, which works out to about 20 cents per can (depending on local sales tax).
Note that I'm not a root beer snob, and always buy the cheapest brand I can find. :)
