For years, I'd heard of dehydrated refried beans, but had not seen any in any major store, until two winters ago, at a Walmart in the Texas Panhandle.
I immediately grabbed one, and only got around to trying it this month, in combination with Clover Valley chili flavored Corn Chips to make Andrew Skurka's rice & beans with corn chips & cheese hiker meal.

Review:

These were very easy to prepare.
The package instructions said to simmer, but in my experience, this type of food can usually be prepared by adding boiling water, then leaving it to sit for 5 to 15 minutes.
It was very bland, which I expected.

Two years ago, these cost $2.28 and have about 654 calories (per pouch), so their cost per calorie-day is $6.97 which is somewhat pricey, however worthwhile as a sample.
In combination with other food items (rice, cheese, corn chips), I made a total of six (6) meals from the contents of the pouch, and it was very convenient to be able to make use of a single portion (i.e. less than a can) at each time.
I will definitely look for larger quantities at lower unit prices.
